Client Frequently Asked Questions

What is a Referral Agency?

A home care referral agency, also known as a domestic referral agency, represents a viable, often highly cost-effective alternative for many clients seeking home care and other in-home services. This model is known as “Consumer-Directed Care” and emphasizes the rights of clients and/or their families to determine the parameters of care and specify services delivered within the home. Similarly, this model affords clients and/or their family members the opportunity to select and negotiate fees directly with the Professional Caregiver.

How do I work with you to find the Professional Caregiver?

Vitalitas incorporates comprehensive tools to determine the home care needs and preferences of prospective clients based on a screening interview. After you engage with Vitalitas, we utilize both sophisticated matching technologies and personalized review to identify those Professional Caregivers who are best suited to address your needs. After personally contacting each prospective in-home care provider to confirm her or his interest in the opportunity to serve you, we then provide clients with each referred Professional Caregiver’s profile and can facilitate scheduling the initial meeting.

Is there an advantage to partnering with Vitalitas?

The Consumer-Directed Care model fosters empowerment and ownership – both for clients and/or family members, as well as for Professional Caregivers. By communicating directly with one another regarding the scope of home care services, fees and other components of the engagement, clients and Professional Caregivers attain a greater understanding and appreciation for one another’s needs and expectations. In addition, this model often provides significant savings for clients and increased earnings for the in-home care provider.

Who employs the Professional Caregiver?

Vitalitas Home Care Referral Agency is not the employer of the domestic workers it refers. The domestic worker may be the client’s employee or an independent contractor depending upon the relationship established between the client and the domestic worker. If the client and/or family members direct and control the manner and means by which the domestic worker performs his or her work they may have employer responsibilities, including employment taxes and workers’ compensation, under state and federal law. For additional information contact your local Employment Development Department and the Internal Revenue Service.

Is there a minimum or maximum number of hours a Professional Caregiver can work?

Vitalitas does not establish or enforce any hourly minimums or maximums. Whether a client is seeking daily check-in care that may only require one hour of the domestic worker’s time, 24-hour/live-in care or anything in between, we will strive to refer candidates who are willing and able to service the client’s needs.

What are your rates?

The referral fee Vitalitas charges clients for our services is negotiable and based upon a fixed percentage of the Professional Caregiver’s gross weekly earnings and calculated using the domestic worker’s base hourly rate. There is no additional hidden fee clients pay for the referral service.

What is the hourly rate for the Professional Caregiver?

Vitalitas does not determine the hourly rates Professional Caregivers charge their clients. Rather, fees are negotiated directly between the client and/or family members and referred candidates. However, we will communicate to clients what rates potential caregivers are seeking for their services and we will communicate to candidates what the client is willing to offer in order to facilitate and expedite the process.

What about minimum wage?

Under both Federal and California law, Professional Caregivers are entitled to earn a base hourly rate no less than the prevailing minimum wage. Hourly rates are agreed upon between the Client and the Professional Caregiver. Vitalitas does not set hourly rates for services.

What do I need to know about overtime pay and holiday pay?

Both Federal and California law proscribes that Professional Caregivers earn overtime pay, although a discrepancy exists between those laws regarding the worked hours threshold for receiving overtime pay. To protect the interests of our clients and the Professional Caregivers we refer, Vitalitas subscribes to the more stringent “8/40 rule” for overtime pay and will only accept clients who agree to abide by this standard.

A predetermined holiday pay rate is not required under Federal or California laws. However, a holiday pay rate may be negotiated directly between the client and/or family members and the Professional Caregiver engaged to provide in-home services.
